Posted – 05.10.24 – Class of 2012, no less. Although living here in Sunny EU Berlin for some decades, and being able to speak, understand, write & read the language fairly competently, taking (and passing) an ‚Official‘ State-Recognised) Public Exam to a certain level, and getting the Certificate to actually prove it, is another kettle of badly-packed-kippers entirely. All of us here, („that’s me in the corner losing my religion“) had different nationalities, I was the only one who’d been in town for so long, so had a slight advantage, (though not a contest in any way of course). They were all mature graduates in their various fields, (one actually a Professor Dr. of Physics no less). A very nice bunch of hard-working people, we met in class daily for 6 hours, for a whole year (plenty of homework was ladled out as well). An’ Internationally ‚Professionally-Recognised‘ Measure of Competence’ in any Foreign Language (not to be confused with UK O & A levels, or even University (proper) Degrees in the subject) states that an absolute beginner starts with the level A1 (once actually passed that is, – right through to the highest level C2 which essentially refers to Native Speakers (at the very highest level of competence naturally). In Europe/UK for instance, to start a proper (state-funded) apprenticeship/training, one needs at least B2 (which we all got here on our own course – also very useful when applying for German/another Nationality Citizenship too naturally). To study at a State University, one requires at least level C1. There’s a lot of Mickey Mouse Language Courses out there (especially from today’s Third Country Britain, mentioning Cambridge and the like) which are also not cheap, and can often simply go unrecognised when actually applying for said foreign education/training. Private Firms/Schools/Universities can all generally simply do as they please of course, whether the resulting piece of paper is actually worth anything or not, is another matter entirely, innit. PS: After much ado, I finally managed to fund my own course through the European Social Fund (ESF) which I did 100% alone, the final cost was circa €8,500,- so I was very lucky indeed.

PPS: Although being no foreign-language natural, and I always have to keep on the auld ball daily, though do learn something new and interesting German-language-wise constantly. My current level and pretty large vocabulary (roughly the same as my English one) is easily (well I reckon) now C1-C2 (as proven by recent high-requirement jobs where no problems arose in the real ‚unaided‘ world, though one as per usual, only gets paid at one's de facto kosher qualification & experience level), it all depends on the quality of what one regularly watches, listens to and reads, and with whom one actually spends one’s time with of course (as was/is always the case, was/is it not?) therefore, I’ll rest it then – Goodnight! Remembering too; that your College/School are often quite different to where you actually take your Final Exam/s – and the Examination Board actually stated on your Certificate is the one that Actually ‚de facto real-word‘ Counts. AI may well replace translation services, but it can't simply replace Human Skill - This is a Mega Big Global Business - Hooray!

NB: It’s fairly easy to find an Online - ‚Proper UK-Recognised - English C2 Test‘ – So try it out sometime (as a Native) and see just what you Don’t Really Know, (no matter what your own level of percieved‘ competence may be) – Fancy!

Posted – 07.10.24 – Every early October, here in Sunny EU Berlin, our now well-loved „Festival of Lights“ takes place, this now being the 20th no less – Hooray! https://www.visitberlin.de/en/event/festival-lights-2024 As with Londoners, ie ‚those who were actually born there or have lived there for a very long time‘, Berliners also like to Moan quite a lot, about their, er, lot! Though unlike with London (which is nearly 3 times bigger, and 3 times older) they, in contrast, really don’t have anything to genuinely moan about, well Public Services-Wise at least. PS: Many Scandinavians suffer from a now regular ailment called ‚Seasonal Affective Disorder, (SAD) basically a depression brought on by dark and very cold winters, so perhaps they should also have more Light Festivals, like ever-Sunny EU Berlin too then?

This direct winter view shows a school for Soviet kids, ie dependents, just on the other siide, all in a very quiet area (sic), so from December 1982 > July 1985, I did actually get quite a good first-hand knowledge of how they did things along that there Wall (on both sides). PS: On occassion, one could clearly hear live Soviet tank excercises over there, (usually very late at night) a whoosh, then a big bang, right out in moonlit Brandenburg. The small fenced-off/line drawn, demarkation line on the West side (was still de facto GDR territory) so now and again, when some daft git parked his/her car too closely, a crane would actually lift them over into the East, usually at night (and all quite legally). Actually getting them back again, was often an almost impossible, and extremely costly affair (just think of the insurance claim) Fancy!

Posted – 11.10.24 x 6 – This little one-room Pub, namely Zur Linde, is the very first German Pub I ever stepped into – Fancy! It looked very, very, different then, and it was during my second-ever ‚visit here at the end of 1979 (see pic), two years before I moved here proper, no less. Today, it still likes to call itself a ‚Kolleltiv‘ (but that’s simply open to interpretation methinks). Always a cosysomewhat of a middle-class Charlottenburg rarity‘ student-orientated establishment, it’s also catered/s for a certain kind of general-lefty/green punter to-boot. It now is the de facto last German Pub I’ve ever been in as well, as I last visited it some 6 years ago (though only just around the corner), and decided then to knock pubs & cafés (Yawn!) on the head for good, period (for various reasons, but mainly out of total boredom). PS: In my many moons of being here on the auld razzle, I’ve never been barred or kicked- out of a boozer once, unlike some I could mention – And never, ever, de facto fired from a job either - Hooray! - Honnist!

Posted – 14.10.24 - This was quite an interesting time as well, I eventually became the very last British employee (LEC) to leave the very last British Military Establishment in West Berlin in December 1994. My night shift finally finished (06:00 hrs – on the last Testimonial with BRIO) as I handed over the keys, etc to the powers that be (all filmed by the local News too) – An end of an era, so it was! PS: This last lap was a totally different ball-game and relaxed atmosphere compared to my previous stint at Edinburgh House. The acting-Manager was a decent chap (no more of the original staff left, (Old-Manager not included either, he was quite a decent egg too (known from BBYC days) ran the place pretty well, despite being Welsh and an ex-Rugby Ref, he did though also enjoy reading Punch for his sins, some good yarns too Boyo Bach)   (all except for one, who I really consider a friend, and who most kindly tipped me for the job) including many obviously bitter, jealous, quite clueless & talentless, little control-freaks, most unlikely to ever get new, similar jobs in the Real Worlds of either here in Sunny EU Berlin/Germany or in now what’s Third Country Britain – „Cripes!“ ), still serving as an Army WO1 (though soon to retire with his wife, to another very nice little number down Heidelburg way). I tied my slightly longer blonde hair up for starters, (a real No! No! Before) and virtually lived there 24/7, right till the very last night shift (when all was totally quiet and empty), finally ending on Friday16th December 1994. Those 77 days straight (many with 100% voluntary double-shifts) were simply one farewell party after another – I couldn’t believe how many people I’d actually known here (many from my earlier Yacht Club days). Great to have a decent room, free grub, and TV + bath/shower, as well as having shirts, etc, freshly washed & ironed to-boot, although I only actually lived 20 minutes walk away – Magic; Really! PS: The following year the Tax Office soon took the grin of my face (as I’d really earned a lot in a short time) by asking for much of it back, „What goes around comes around as they say!Only money, innit. https://webmail.freenet.de/Cloud/?shareToken=27680202b03e9947cb63d98c92be8512d6f9a45e PS: Bit of this and that later on as well, to keep the old hand in, as one does – https://webmail.freenet.de/Cloud/?shareToken=69d92c109310976e20020575685646a66b660b03 Full CV - Link (in German at top of this page) PPS: Finally - One rather odd coincidence, (well for me at least) was that when I first started at Edinburgh House. It’d just been completely refurbished and well tarted-up, with the whole Service being provided in the interim-period, at a nearby Barracks (staff and all). The usual standard moans prevailed about it all being so much better before under the old Boss (though nobody actually ever explained to me why of course). A big official Opening Day was had with one of the VIP guests being the much-loved (just retired) ex- Manager (also an old Army Major, no less). I met him for the first time, and said I was looking forward to learning something new and working there, and that I’d just enjoyed a refreshing short holiday at my Granny’s so was now ready to go full-steam-ahead. so to speak. He politely enquired where I’d been, to which I replied, „Bembridge on the Isle of Wight“ he then laughed pretty loudly saying „that’s where my wife and I have just moved to“ – Small World indeed, some of my new direct colleagues really did give me looks that could kill, so I was duly warned of what was to come (if I wasn’t careful) – Yawn!

That'll be 'Koh Samet' of course

He ran another smaller place before, called Enklave, where I first met him, he really had an excellent sense of Black ‚wry, intelligent Humour, (though never racist) as well as a fine taste in Music, with literally thousands of tapes aux-various (and all in decent English too). We shared the same birthday, he being exactly 20 years older, and oddly enough, we found ourselves working in the same firm together at the start of the 2000‘s as well. He made it to the grand old age of 79, so not too bad considering!

This was really quite a serious ‚Esoteric‘ (sic) Madhouse at the time, where the musical likes of Brown Sugar“ or „High Ho Silver Lining“ would never have been heard/played there in a million bleedin years, period, and I totally loved it, Really Quite Extreme Nutters All“, (I also first met one fine moaning, the well thick-cockney mates & muckers, Bob Harlow Esq aka Robin (Poplar-born) and young Ginger aka Brian Knight (Epsom-born) playing pool in Hyronimous, and the rest is bleedin history, innit) both a decade+ older than moir too John – Honnist. Hyronimous went on later to re-locate to Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, which is happily far nearer to me, and they did a terrific job there too, making it almost as good as the original – then it all went and moved once again, even nearer, but that’s another story entirely, innit - Hooray°!

These particular two though, had decided they’d much rather battle over the carcass of a street-rat instead. The distinct differences attwixt, The Law of Nature, just over the road in the Schloßpark, where owls, etc, regularly devour nice fresh field mice et al, and The Law of The Street / Hood, oddly came to mind? Also Posted – 09.11.24 - Richard Nelson French aka Richy was a pretty decent chap. He spent well over 30 years happily cycling all over town of an evening from pub to café, to wherever, selling the local Berlin TAZ Newspaper. I, like many others, knew him well for a long time, usually when he visited our particular hostelry of choice naturally. An American, I think I can fairly safely say that I was the only one around here who actually spoke to him in English, and his always well up-to-date knowledge of British Football (and politics) was second to none, most impressive, really. He liked a swift half, a little chat, then went merrily on his way again – a real Gent in fact. PS: One of his little insider jokes was to deliberately refer to The Hammers as West Hampton! So here we are some 30 odd years later, and I’m still waiting for the big con rush, must be in his daft DNA then, eh? Wonder how many mugs he did actually sting though, before scarpering back to Blighty?

The South Atlantic was well rough, and most were not used to being on continually rolling (enclosed) ships anyway. He said the „Civvy Crews & Nurses“ were all „Fucking Brilliant from Day One“. Descending the webbing (with full kit) on the side of the ships in rough seas onto smaller craft, was a real tester though; an excercise he’d never really like to repeat too often – Understatement indeed - Phew! PS; (my own comment) Not to forget, that no journalists or photographers were allowed in this conflict whatso’ever, barring the Military’s own Press Corp and Auntie was permitted one, er, artist (with pencils & paper, court-style). Many thousands of top-middle-management, highly experienced UK Military Folk left their Service well early, after this dogs-breakfast shindig. Also posted – 14.01.25 – Fun Facts (easily confirmed by any proper Kosher ‚non-fake-news‘ ,Academic - News/History Outlet). In 1932, 1 year before Cpl Carpetchewer began his 1000-year-Reich (sorry, er, 12 years) he encountered serious problems in Erfurt / Thuringia getting a, er, German Passport. Being a convicted criminal, (who’d already served real jail time time) and a de facto PARADOX foreigner at that, the Prussian beurocracy seemed pretty unwilling to aid this silly (hardly understandable) little man. He actually gained power the very next year, via a series of well-iffy ‚referendums‘ and having his uniformed thugs on the streets too of course. Now fast-forward to today, and we note that as well as the great Prussian talent for meticulously recording just about everything, their successors (both East & West) were equally manic about recording everything to the letter as well. Although it definately helps ‚historians‘ (sic) get these periods together, one also wonders at the motives of these regimes too? Was it just mind-blowingly arrogant confidence, fear of never being wrong (legally) or simply just good old human Madness?

Post WWII, the Yanks did a brilliant job of microfilming hundreds of thousands of NS Files, saving the meticuloiusly protocolled intel for future generations aux-various to ponder upon (most still legally Restricted to prevent journalistic (sic) abuse). My own ‚fairly recent‘ experience of studying original NS Police & Justice Files (both Paper and MF (still not digitalized, though now properly indexed, well in our own project’s sphere of interest at least) – Please refer to The Front Page - posted – 21.05.24 „Here’s Some of my Favourite Things“) at Berlin’s State & National Archives, reminds me too, that in the 1950‘s (with the Governing Allies consent) tens of thousands of NS Paper Files were destroyed, just for a matter of space + cost (lost forever). It would be a great tragedy if something similar happens with all the remaining Stasi Files (quite convenient for some politically too of course). In this new age of digitalization, I’m confident that Berlin (and the EU) will be able to fund such a task, to also act, not only as a fantastic de facto archive, but as a reminder, of what psychological + physical horrors occurred, not so very long ago (here in our little island – West Berlin, stuck right in the middle of the post-WWII / actual-Cold War Soviet Union) https://www.dw.com/en/stasi-secret-police-35-years-on-my-file-is-mine/a-71293301

Large groups of young people aux-various, aged between 18 – 29 were asked what they knew (if anything) about the Holocaust? Here in Sunny EU Germany for instance, the figure of 12% was ascertained, meaning that those people had no knowledge of it whatso’ever. The 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz- Birkenau ‚liberation‘ by Soviet troops‘ in 1945 comes around next Monday, so perhaps many a young person (especially those clueless fans of Farage, Johnson & Co in ever-Racist Third Country Britain) should take a really close look, and actually learn something ‚REAL & FACTUAL‘ for once - https://www.auschwitz.org/en/home-page-80/ - PS: The estimated 400 million people (globally) who speak German on a daily basis, will also be acutely aware that circa 120 of their regularly used words, are de facto Yiddish, no less – Fancy! Very smart money says that the new up-and- coming post-election Gernan government and opposition will comprise of the following; A CDU/CSU, SPD 2-Party Coalition – led by Friedrich Merz as Chancellor (with Boris Pistorius as most likely Foreign Secretary). Opposition parties will include, a slightly smaller Green Party, a very slightly larger Link Party, BSW will just edge in with 5-6%, and the AfD will more than double their current vote percentage (though nobody will work with them at national level, as they are deemed dangerous and undemocratic) the FDP will not get the required 5% to re-enter the Bundestag.

It’s situated just over the road from my own HQ of exactly 40 years, so I walk past the thronging masses of familiar old faces sitting outside (in all weathers) daily -https://www.brotgarten.de/ - PS: A few years ago, I took to learning to bake my own bread, which as well as being great fun to do, tastes absolutely brilliant, (my favourite being Sunflower seed). A fresh slice with butter is heavenly, it’s terrific toasted a few days later as well, drop of olive oil to-boot – Luvvyl Jubbly! PPS: I changed to using olive oil only (including for a monthly fried dish of whatever takes my fancy) about 20+ years ago, works for me, I haven’t looked back since, it has many positive benefits, really.

Other nationalities run various small business’s along both sides and directions too. I’m especially pleased to see the little tree thriving, (one of three) which are now circa 3 years old. Sunny EU Berlin does still retain its place as the greenest capital city in the world, (if not the most tolerant as well) though many trees and forests have been excpetionally stressed over the last few years, with extreme heat and far too little seasonal rain to-boot.

About 18 months ago, 4 x Luftwaffe Eurofighters flew non-stop, all the way from their base here in Sunny EU Germany to Australia, no less. Participating in NATO-related manouvers with many other allied nations to-boot. Although they had to make circa 4 de facto short landings (bathroom breaks + small tech checks) en-reoute, it was still classed officially as non-stop, all the rest carried out via mid-air refuelling where possible. This First, (clapped-in by many of their counterparts) was lightly/no-nonsense reported in professional quality media only. PPS:Just imagine what Squadron Leader Farage (or indeed Fatty Johnson) would have made of it all, if it had been their RAF Typhoons aka, er, Eurofighters instead, we’d never hear the bloody end of it, period.

Fun Facts Down Memory Lane From Sunny EU Berlin – 06.09.2025

In 1970‘s London, dear old Concorde was flown over the city on numerous occassions creating a sonic-boom here and there as it went. Unfortunately this caused quite a few old people to have heart attacks, (dicky strawberries) so had to be stopped. Fast forward to today, here in Sunny EU Berlin, and it’s just been announced that next Thursday at exactly 11:00 hrs, the city’s new siren-warning-system will be tested for the very first time (all phones getting a warning message too). As with Concorde, occupied West Berlin was also pretty careful with not scaring the locals too much, when the Allies decided to have spontaneous (sic) excercises (aka Rocking Horse - British Sector), tanks, armed squaddies, the lot, so they were often quietly reported in the local press (mainly missed by non-German-speaking, er, Allies, myself included). The last time I can actually recall hearing an Air Raid Warning Siren (never here, in nearly 45 years) was also in the 70‘s from the roof of the old cop-shop in Chadwell Heath (now the Eva Hart boozer) and just over the road from the Coopers of course – Fancy!

I just happened to be watching the Bundestag Live on TV, whils’t enjoying my morning Cafè aux Lait, when the sirens went off outside (and well bloody eerie they sound too). By pure coincidence, the politician (sic) speaking at the time was from the AfD and was rudely interrupted by hundreds of very loud smartphones going haywire (some laughter too). As they say „5 minutes is a long time in politics, innit“ PS: Lucky that nice Mr Putin didn’t decide to attack us during a practice run then, wunnit, just wouldn’t be cricket, now would it! - "Don't Panic!  PS: At the end of the 1990‘s I happened to meet an old boy (then 97, born Posen - 1902 > Today
Poznań

- EU Poland) who had served with the Brigade „Der Schnelle Truppe“ as he called them, namely Willy Franz, no less. He came to Berlin in circa 1929, after learning a trade, and doing some years as a Wehrmacht soldier at the same time. This then qualified him to join the Fire Brigade (a relatively secure and well paid job). He told me of his times pre and during the war, (a lot of body burying was done) though reckoned the times during the 1950‘s (Schöneburg, later Charlottenburg) were even tougher, mainly due to domestic gas explosions, with often horrific consequences, then the daily killing of badly injured horses to-boot. He told me many tales, all in a very matter of fact way, he was a happy-go-lucky kind of guy (neither political or overly religious), and made it to his 100th year, living at home as fit as a fiddle. PPS: Willy grew up on the land, his father being a master apiarist (beekeeper) Imkermeister and was also in charge of the local Posen water works. His beloved wife died some 30 years before he did, and his two daughters (who I met) were both then roughly my own  current age (67) having just retired, and they both looked amazingly young, (mid-40‘s) it must have been all that top-notch honey? NB: He also kept pretty mentally fit too, he loved his house plants, as well as going to the weekly local Senior Hop for a chat & dance with all the other local Oldies (yours truly often in attendance)

We all required our parents written permission to see these, as they were considered quite contraversial at the time. Such stark content had never been aired on any of the then 3 major British TV Channels. Although The Holocaust had been often mentioned and discussed on Sunday afternoon „All Our Yesterdays“ etc, for example, as well as the US TV Series „Holocaust“ being shown, it was still nothing like actually watching theseno hold barred‘ Newsreels for the very first time. US, British and Soviet scenes were shown (with matter of fact commentary) all very shocking – Really!
